Loaves and Fishes Ministry
Four Sundays a year, we serve meals to homeless individuals and families at the Dorothy Day/Higher Ground Center in downtown St. Paul. To make this happen, we need volunteers to serve, cook and donate cookies and bars.
Loaves & Fishes gives us the opportunity to share our time, food and hospitality with those in need. During the short span of four hours on a Sunday afternoon we cook a complete meal and serve 250 to 330 people. Over the years many families and friends have found Loaves & Fishes to be a great opportunity to work together as a team on a short but satisfying project. Experience is not necessary! All you need to be able to do is take direction from the crew coordinators and smile.
Would you like to be part of the Loaves and Fishes Coordinating Team? Our church’s effort is coordinated by a team of leaders who rotate through coordinating the meals. If you would like to join that rotation, please contact Mahlon Collins and he will happily find you a slot!
We are excited to be a part of an encouraging transition at the Dorothy Day Center, as they expand their facilities to include more beds for both shelter and transitional housing at Higher Ground and to house a wider range of services to clients at the Dorothy Day Center itself. Here’s a recent news story about this ground-breaking partnership between the non-profit organization Catholic Charities and the public sector.
